Unknown history of BitcoinTalk.org

Do you know what Satoshi Nakamoto, Hal Finney, and Vitalik Buterin have in common? They work in Web3. That’s not the case. They also have another common area. That is BitcoinTalk.

In today’s story:

  • 📑BitcoinTalk 101

  • 🔍️Hidden Opportunity of BitcoinTalk

  • 👑Historic involvement of BitcoinTalk.

 In This Story📖

📑BitcoinTalk 101:

We are talking about BitcoinTalk—the goldmine of the crypto world.

The history of this forum is a little bit complicated. Before this forum, Satoshi used a Sourceforge forum. Unfortunately, this forum is no longer on the web.

After that, Satoshi launched a new Bitcoin forum. He registered at the URL bitcoin .org/smf, and then it moved to forum. bitcoin .org. The bitcoin .org domain is owned by Cobra (before that, Sirius, AKA Martti Malmi, owned that).

In 2011, the whole forum was transferred to a dedicated domain, bitcointalk .org. And this forum is linked with bitcoin .org.

Today, BitcoinTalk is now an unofficial forum.

Theymos AKA Michael Marquant manages bitcointalk .org. He was also the owner of Bitcoin WiKi (bitcoin .it) and the lead administrator of the subreddit /r/bitcoin. On the other hand, Cobra manages bitcoin .org.

🔍️Hidden Opportunity:

You might be wondering why people use this forum, which is mostly text-based.

The answer is it’s audience…

It has a super niche audience. They are mostly Bitcoin enthusiasts or interested in decentralized systems. Moreover, they have over 2 million community members, mostly developers and investors.

They discuss mining, Bitcoin, alternate crypto-currencies, and investing. Shortly, everything related to cryptocurrency.

Another underrated use case is the ICOs or blockchain-based projects.

ICOs means Initial Coin Offerings. It is done through ANN threads. It means announcement threads.

This thread has to be well organized. Where you have to explain what the project is about, what is the main USP, and a detailed description of ICOs (such as token prices, date of token sales, and use cases).

Also, you have to add who are the persons behind this project. Don’t forget to embed links to whitepapers, websites, social media, and so on.

How it works:

The forum has many different sections and sub-forums all related to the cryptocurrency world. Mostly, all are ANN threads and discussions.

It also has some titles that are given to the forum members. Such as Legendary, Hero member, Newbie and many more.

Yeap, you can also see your merit number. It gives to every user. Here’s a detailed explanation.

👑Historic Involvement:

Pizza Day:

You might hear the name of Laszlo Hanyecz or his iconic story of buying 2 pizzas with 10,000 BTC.

Back in 2010, he posted on BitcoinTalk, ‘Pizza for bitcoins?’. And a user agreed with this deal. This was the first time in history someone bought a physical item using Bitcoin. The whole trade happened in BitcoinTalk.

Ethereum Launching:

Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin.

The beginning of the coin happened in the BitcoinTalk forum. Throwback to 2014, Vitalik announced Ethereum through an ANN thread. Where he expresses who works behind this project and other necessary information related to Ethereum.

Litecoin Announcement:

Litecoin is also a popular cryptocurrency.

It was first announced by BitcoinTalk user Coblee in 2011. He presents it as a ‘Lite version of Bitcoin’. It was a modified version of Bitcoin, or you can call it a cheap alternative of Bitcoin.

First Bitcoin Exchange:

If we look into the 2010 era, there was no exchange available for Bitcoin. A user called dwdollar posted that he is in the process of building a crypto exchange.

Dogecoin v1.10.0

Maybe I don’t need to explain what Dogecoin is.

Dogecoin became a popular meme-coin just for Elon Musk. It’s a different story.

Dogecoin was also first announced in BitcoinTalk in 2013. The interesting fact is, it takes only 30 days to cross a million site visitors.
